  • Masia Freixa, built 1896, in the Parc de San Jordi, Terrassa, Catalonia, Spain. This modernist building was initially a spinning mill, at the time when Terrassa was an important centre for woollen fabrics during the industrial revolution. It was restored 1907-1914 by Louis Muncunill i Parellada, and became the family home of textile industrialist Joaquim Freixa i Argemi. Inspired by Gaudi, this building started Terrassenc modernism. The form combines traditional building and materials with modern Catalan vaults, shapes, and materials. Traditional arcades form porches on the south (seen here) and west sides, but with a parabolic shape first explored by Gaudi and windows that reflect this shape. The 4 storey octagonal white tower is embedded with crystals, reflecting traditional methods. Picture by Manuel Cohen

  • Aerial view of the Murray star shaped maze, designed by Adrian Fisher, in the grounds of Scone Palace, rebuilt 1802-12 by William Atkinson in late Georgian Gothic style, Perthshire, Scotland. The maze is planted with copper and green beech, after the Earl of Mansfield’s family tartan, Ancient Murray of Tullibardine, and is in the shape of a 5 pointed star from the Murray emblem.   • Monumental fountain in pink granite, oriented to the rising sun during the Winter Solstice and to the setting sun during the Summer Solstice, in the shape of a boat, aerial view, at Bibracte, a Gaulish oppidum or fortified city, once the capital of the Aedui, at Mont Beuvray near Autun in Burgundy, France. The fountain has been partially restored, and was originally waterproofed with a coating of red clay. The amphitheatre is oval in shape and held 15000 spectators for gladiator contests, fights and public executions. Within the arena, a 6th century visigothic basilica was replaced by the 12th century Romanesque Gothic church of Santa Maria del Miracle. The amphitheatre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.   • Domed ceiling, 1427, in the Salon de Embajadores, or Hall of Ambassadors, in the Mudejar Palace, or Palacio del Rey Don Pedro, built by Pedro I of Castile in 1364, in the Real Alcazar, a Moorish royal palace in Seville, Andalusia, Spain. The Hall of Ambassadors was the throne room of King Don Pedro I, 1334-1369. The square shape of the room represents the earth and the circular dome, the universe, covered in carved wooden star patterns. The Alcazar was first founded as a fort in 913, then developed as a palace in the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries and used by both Muslim and Christian rulers.   • Brick rib vaults supporting the paraboloid walls of the Crypta Guell, built 1898-1915, an unfinished church by Catalan Modernist architect Antoni Gaudi, 1852-1926, in the Colonia Guell, a workers' colony set up by Eusebi Guell in Santa Coloma de Cervello, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The church is an organic hyperbolic paraboloid shape, with leaning pillars and catenary arches supporting the structure. The colony was begun in 1890 on Guell's estate Can Soler de la Torre, with a hospital, boardinghouse, schools, shops, theatres, chapel, factories and workers' housing. Gaudi was in charge of the project, collaborating with Francesc Berenguer, Joan Rubio and Josep Canaleta. Gaudi's crypt is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen

The fractured shapes in this window refer to the Allied bombing of the cathedral in 1944 during the Second World War. The project to commission contemporary stained glass windows in the cathedral was begun 1987-88 under Dominique Bozo, and they were inaugurated on 29th April 2011. The building was reworked in the 17th century by Vauban under Louis XIV. The fort is listed as a historic monument and has been a museum since 2008.
