  • The Cutting Scene, Mandan O-Kee-pa Ceremony, painting, oil on canvas, 1832, by George Catlin, 1796-1872, in the Denver Art Museum, Denver, Colorado, USA. The young Mandan Indians were willing participants in the O-Kee-pa, a sacred ceremony held to ensure their community’s prosperity. The men were suspended by splints inserted into their chest and back muscles (a procedure that, although painful, didn’t cause lasting injury).
