  • The Tree of Good and Madness, oil painting on canvas, c. 1560, by an unknown artist from Picardie, in the Musee des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Blois, housed since 1869 on the first floor of the Louis XII wing of the Chateau Royal de Blois, built 13th - 17th century in Blois in the Loire Valley, Loir-et-Cher, Centre, France. This is a moralising painting like the danses macabres, with a young man in the tree playing the lute, with religion followed by an angel, and flesh followed by the devil. At the foot of the tree Christ rings the hours surrounded by a kneeling St Catherine and by death. The inscriptions on the banners exhort the young man to prefer good over evil. The chateau has 564 rooms and 75 staircases and is listed as a historic monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen

  • Town of Salins-les-Bains blessed by Jesus and Saints, oil painting, 1629, by Nicolas Richard, in the Introductory Room of the Museum of Salt or Musee du Sel, designed by architects Malcotti-Roussey and opened May 2009, in the Great Saltworks at Salins-les-Bains, Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, France. The painting measures 4x2m and was originally exhibited in the former Musee Max Claudet. It is displayed in a specially made temperature controlled cabinet. It demonstrates the importance of the Great Saltworks to the town in the 17th century. 15th century saltworks were replaced by industrial buildings in the 18th century, where saline water was pumped from underground wells and evaporated to form salt. Saline water was also piped from here from 1780 until 1895 through 21km of wood then cast iron pipes to the Royal Saltworks or Saline Royale at Arc-et-Senans to be processed. The saltworks at Salins-les-Bains ceased production in 1962 and are now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen

  • St Nicholas of Bari, oil painting on canvas, 1767, by Vito d’Anna, 1718-69, in the Duomo San Giorgio, designed by Rosario Gagliardi and built 1738-75 in Sicilian Baroque and Neoclassical style, in Ragusa Ibla, in Sicily, Italy. The saint is depicted dressed as a bishop, seated on a cloud and surrounded by putti, one of whom holds the 3 golden balls representing the 3 dowries. The town of Ragusa is split into the lower and older town of Ragusa Ibla, and the higher upper town of Ragusa Superiore, separated by the Valle dei Ponti. It is built on the site of an ancient city, inhabited by Sicels, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans. In 1693 it was devastated by an earthquake, and was rebuilt in the Baroque style. The town forms part of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen

The museum originally opened in 1850 in the Francois I wing, but moved here in 1869 after the rooms had been restored by Felix Duban in 1861-66.
