  • Chapel in the Lower Hermitage of the Santuario de la Virgen de la Fuente, or Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Fountain, built 1658-1783, Penarroya de Tastavins, Matarrana, Teruel, Aragon, Spain. This chapel is in Baroque style and has an exterior portico at the site of 15 springs. In the 13th century, an image of the Virgin Mary was discovered beside a spring in this spot, and a chapel was built, which was replaced in the 14th century by a Gothic building.   • Stained glass window of the Descent from the Cross, detail of ladder and skull, designed by artist Jean Michel Alberola, b. 1953, and made by master glassmaker Dominique Duchemin, in the Chapel of Memory in Nevers Cathedral, or Cathedral of Saint Cyricus and Saint Julitta of Nevers, Nevers, Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, France. The cross is tau-shaped (last letter of the Hebrew alphabet, sign of redemption) and is violet, the colour of Christ's Passion. Jesus' body has been brought down and he is mourned by the Virgin, 'Mater dolorosa'. A skull in the lower right corner represents Golgotha, ​​'place of the skull'. The project to commission contemporary stained glass windows in the cathedral was begun 1987-88 under Dominique Bozo, and they were inaugurated on 29th April 2011.   • Lower level of the Phare de Cordouan or Cordouan Lighthouse, with the King's Lieutenant's Apartments on the right, built 1584-1611 in Renaissance style by Louis de Foix, 1530-1604, French architect, located 7km at sea, near the mouth of the Gironde estuary, Aquitaine, France. This is the oldest lighthouse in France. There are 4 storeys, with keeper apartments and an entrance hall, King's apartments, chapel, secondary lantern and the lantern at the top at 68m. Parabolic lamps and lenses were added in the 18th and 19th centuries. The lighthouse is listed as a historic monument. Picture by Manuel Cohen

  • In Jerusalem in 43 AD, under the orders of Herod Agrippa, an executioner is about to lower his sword and behead James. James is kneeling and blindfolded, his hands extended in prayer. The hand of God blesses him. Section of the beheading of St James, 1210-25, from the Life of St James window in the ambulatory of Chartres Cathedral, Eure-et-Loir, France. This window tells the story of the life of St James the Greater, apostle of Jesus and son of Zebedee. It is situated next to the apostles chapel. Chartres is a stop on the pilgrimage route to Compostela, where James' relics lie. Chartres cathedral was built 1194-1250 and is a fine example of Gothic architecture. Most of its windows date from 1205-40 although a few earlier 12th century examples are also intact. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Picture by Manuel Cohen
