The upper storey of the Patio was built by Luis de Vega under the reign of Charles V, 1540-1572. The Real Alacazar was commissioned by Pedro I of Castile in 1364 to be built in the Mudejar style by Moorish craftsmen. The palace, built on the site of an earlier Moorish palace, is a stunning example of the style and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The garden in this courtyard is of a Moorish plan. The staircase is rumoured to have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci. The largest of the Loire Valley chateaux, Chambord has a central keep with 4 bastion towers on the corners, a moat and an elaborate decorative roofline. Josep Maria Jujol, 1879-1949, designed the windows and fluid wrought iron balconies and the plaster work is by Joan Beltran. The roof houses many skylights, staircase openings and chimneys, some with mosaic work, and with twisted, organic forms. The columns have been reused and the capitals show Corinthian influence. The church displays influences of Carolingian, Pre-Romanesque and Roman architecture and is one of the most important Romanesque structures in Catalonia. The monastery itself was founded in 945 by monks who escaped Barbarian invasions with relics of saints, and was eventually sacked in the 17th century and deserted in the 18th century. The first fortifications on this spur over the river Marne date from the 4th century and the first castle was built in the 9th century Merovingian period by the counts of Vermandois. Thibaud II enlarged the castle in the 12th century and built the Tour Thibaud, and Thibaud IV expanded it significantly in the 13th century to include 17 defensive towers in the walls and an East and South gate. Newgrange was built by a farming community in the Boyne Valley during the Neolithic or New Stone Age. Originally classified as a passage tomb, it is now recognised as an ancient Temple, with astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance. The Republic of Malta consists of seven islands in the Mediterranean Sea of which Malta, Gozo and Comino have been inhabited since c.5,200 BC. Nine of Malta's important historical monuments are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Citadella, which has been a fortified city since the Bronze Age. Sited on a hill above Victoria (or Rabat) which dominates the surrounding countryside and coast, it was built up by the Phoenicians and then the Romans into a complex Acropolis. In the Middle Ages the Citadel was used as a refuge for the population by the Order of the Knights of St John. In 1551 the island was attacked by Muslims and the population taken away into slavery. Most of the remaining architecture is military although some fine examples of Maltese Baroque were constructed over the military settlement, including the 17th century Cathedral, seen in the background.
