  • Stone statue of a hunter, 14th century, Fontenay Abbey, Marmagne, Burgundy, France. The hunter is standing, wearing a tunic, cloak and boots, with a hunting horn slung over this shoulder. This Cistercian abbey was founded by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux in 1119, built in the Romanesque style. The abbey itself housed 300 monks from 1200, but was sacked during the French Revolution. The original castle complex was built in 723-743 by Walid Ibn Yazid, the future Umayyad Caliph Walid II. It was a fortress with military garrison and residence of the Umayyad Caliphs. The project was commissioned by Francesca Morera and overseen after her death by her son Albert Lleo i Morera. This sculptural work was commissioned by Albert Lleo i Morera, in memory of a dead child. The architect employed many Modernist craftsmen on the project, with sculptures by Eusebi Arnau, furniture by Gaspar Homar, ceramics by Antoni Serra i Fiter and mosaics by Mario Maragliano and Lluis Bru.   • Fresco of hunting scene from hall at Qasr Amra, Jordan. Hunters are seen skinning and butchering the dead animal with knives. These early Islamic frescoes have strong Persian and Byzantine influences. The original castle complex was built in 723-743 by Walid Ibn Yazid, the future Umayyad Caliph Walid II. In 1908 the abbey was bought by Gustave Fayet, an art collector and wine grower, who renovated many of the rooms and commissioned artworks. Founded by the Viscount of Narbonne in 1093, Fontfroide linked to the Cistercian order in 1145. Today the abbey estate produces AOC Corbieres wine. Picture by Manuel Cohen
