  • The Canigou or Pic du Canigou, 2784m, highest summit in the Eastern Pyrenees, and the Canigou massif, Conflent, Pyrenees Orientales, Languedoc Roussillon, France. Called Pica del Canigo in Catalan, this mountain has a special significance to Catalan people. Until the 18th century it was believed to be the highest peak in the Pyrenees. The lintel, originally an altar support, was commissioned by abbot Guillaume in the 11th century and is a bas-relief of Christ in Majesty in a mandorla with 2 archangels and figures in arched niches, and a latin inscription to King Robert II the Pious of France.
