Christ enthroned and the martyrdom of St Thomas a Beckett, fresco, late 12th - early 13th centuries, from the apse of the Church of Santa Maria  or Church of St Mary, churches of Sant Pere, Terrassa, Catalonia, Spain. The Church of Santa Maria dates from the 6th century, with an 11th century nave and Romanesque frescoes. The Sant Pere complex consists of 2 churches (Sant Pere and Santa Maria) and a baptistery (Sant Miquel, following the Byzantine model. They were built close to the site of old Egara to be the seat of the Egara diocese, founded c. 450 AD.   • Carved stone capital with winged creature, 13th century, in the cloister of the Old Cathedral of Coimbra, or Se Velha de Coimbra, a 12th century Romanesque Roman Catholic cathedral in Coimbra, Portugal. The capitals in the cathedral date from between the Romanesque and Gothic periods, and show Arab and pre-Romanesque influences. They depict mainly vegetal designs with some birds and animals but no humans or biblical scenes, possibly because the artists were mozarabic, Christians who lived in Arab territories where the depiction of people was forbidden under Islam. The cathedral was designed by Master Robert, a French architect, with the works overseen by Master Bernard and Master Soeiro. It was reworked in the 16th century, with the addition of tiled decoration, a portal and Renaissance chapel. The city of Coimbra dates back to Roman times and was the capital of Portugal from 1131 to 1255. Its historic buildings are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen

  • Looking up at the ceiling of the nave of the Romanesque church, founded 1022, of Sant Pere de Rodes, a Benedictine monastery on the Verdera mountain in the Sierra de Rodes, Puerto de la Selva, Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The columns have been reused and the capitals show Corinthian influence. The church displays influences of Carolingian, Pre-Romanesque and Roman architecture and is one of the most important Romanesque structures in Catalonia. The monastery itself was founded in 945 by monks who escaped Barbarian invasions with relics of saints, and was eventually sacked in the 17th century and deserted in the 18th century.   • Se Velha or Old Cathedral, a 12th century Romanesque church built by Master Robert of France in Coimbra, Portugal. The cathedral was commissioned by King Afonso Henriques after the Battle of Ourique in 1139. The Western facade has a crenellated roofline and an arched portal with Arabic and Pre-romanesque influences, and a similar window above. In the background is the University of Coimbra clock tower. The University of Coimbra was first founded in 1290 and moved to Coimbra in 1308 and to the royal palace in 1537. The historic buildings of Coimbra are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.   • Sant Marti Church, built in 1538 on the remains of a pre-Romanesque church of 926 AD, in San Marti d'Empuries, a medieval town on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, Spain. Nearby is the site of Empuries, an ancient settlement founded in 575 BC by Greek colonists from Phocaea. The town was settled by the Romans from 218 BC and abandoned in the Middle Ages.
