This is a moralising painting like the danses macabres, with a young man in the tree playing the lute, with religion followed by an angel, and flesh followed by the devil. At the foot of the tree Christ rings the hours surrounded by a kneeling St Catherine and by death. The inscriptions on the banners exhort the young man to prefer good over evil.
