The canon dates to 1684 and is thought to be English. It may have been made by the British gunfounder Thomas Western (1624- 1707) and is a large saker, which fired a cast-iron solid shot. It is engraved with the lion of St Mark, the symbol of the Venetian republic, so it may have been captured in battle from Venice or acquired through trade.
