The Virgin in majesty surrounded by angels, sitting on a throne in a mandorla of glory, holding 2 sceptres indicating she is queen of heaven and earth, with the Christ child on her knee, hand raised in blessing. The sun and moon, symbols of universality, are on either side and 2 angels bow down before her, from the apex of the Incarnation and childhood of Christ stained glass window, 12th century, on the Western facade of Chartres Cathedral, Eure-et-Loir, France. Chartres cathedral was built 1194-1250 and is a fine example of Gothic architecture. Most of its windows date from 1205-40 although a few earlier 12th century examples are also intact.
