Barberossa or Redbeard, pirate, 1444, carved stone corbel in the Church of St Mary, or Esglesia de Santa Maria de Cadaques, built in the 17th century, in Cadaques, on the Cap de Creus peninsula, Catalonia, Spain. The 23m high altarpiece is dedicated to the Virgin of Hope, and features scenes of the apocalypse, the life of the Virgin and saints. Picture by Manuel Cohen
