The original church here was founded in the 5th century and dedicated to St Cyrus and St John (Abu Kir and Yohanna). The Church of St Barbara was founded by Athanasius of Edessa, scribe of amir Abdel-Aziz Ibn Marwan, 685-705 AD, to house her relics, then was reworked in 1072-73.
