The Vatican City, centre of the Roman Catholic Church, is an independent state, founded in 1929. St Peter's Basilica was rebuilt during the Renaissance period. Its first architect was Donato Bramante (1444-1514), and the dome was designed by Michelangelo (1475-1564) and completed by Giacomo della Porta (c.1533-1602).
