Founded in 1795 by the Directory and replaced the five learned societies : French Academy, the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, the Academie Royale des Inscriptions et Medailles, the Académie royale des Sciences and the Academie royale d'Architecture, the Institut de France was reorganized several times between 1795 and 1832 but it was finally restored as a fifth academy : the French Academy, the Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (history and archaeology), the Academie des Sciences, the Academie des Beaux-Arts and the Academie des Sciences morales et politiques.
