The museum houses the Centre Europeen de Recherches Prehistoriques (CERP), who work on the excavations at the Caune de l'Arago or La grotte de Tautavel, or Arago Cave, in a limestone cliff in the Gorges du Gouleyrous in the Corbieres Massif, which contains the remains of the Tautavel Man, a subspecies of Homo Erectus, 450,000 years old, along with further evidence of stone age activity.
