The Raft of the Medusa, engraving after the painting of 1818-19 by Theodore Gericault, 1791-1824, from Le Monde Illustre, March 1861. The picture depicts the 15 survivors of the shipwreck of the French naval frigate the Meduse, 132 of whom died on the raft during 13 days at sea, enduring starvation, dehydration and practising cannibalism.
