Triumphal Arch, Volubilis, Morocco, pictured on December 25, 2009. The massive arch, dominating the surrounding landsacpe, 217 AD, was built in honour of Caracalla, Roman Emperor 211-217. Some of the original decoration is still intact. Around the city fertile plains providing agriculural produce stretch towards the mountains. Volubilis, founded in the 3rd century BC was an important city in the Western part of Roman North Africa. The Romans abandoned it in the 3rd century AD.
