Low angle view of fountain with the Circus, 1976, renovated 1999, in the background, Tashkent, Uzbekistan, pictured on July 3, 2010, in the afternoon. People splash happily in the pool around the fountain near the State Circus. Tashkent's first permanent circus, built in 1919, was destroyed in 1966 by an earthquake and replaced by the current circus in 1976. Since the demise of the Soviet Union the Uzbek State Circus has successfully toured the world. Tashkent, 2000 year old capital city of Uzbekistan, a Silk Road city whose name means "Stone Fortress", is now very modern due to a disastrous earthquake in 1966, after which it was greatly rebuilt. However, some of the old buildings still stand in the glittering modern city. Picture by Manuel Cohen.
