Hermogenes, seated cross-legged on a throne, instructs his assistant Philetus, with the aid of a green demon, to argue with the prophet James, whose teachings contradict his own magical principles. This window tells the story of the life of St James the Greater, apostle of Jesus and son of Zebedee. It is situated next to the apostles chapel. Chartres is a stop on the pilgrimage route to Compostela, where James' relics lie. Chartres cathedral was built 1194-1250 and is a fine example of Gothic architecture. Most of its windows date from 1205-40 although a few earlier 12th century examples are also intact. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Picture by Manuel Cohen
