Thomas is at a wedding feast when the servant hits him for not eating as he is distracted by a song praising God. On the left, Thomas leaves Jesus to go with Abbanes to build a palace for the King of India. On the right, Thomas leaves for India in a boat. Below, Christ sends Thomas on his mission to India, from the Life of St Thomas stained glass window, 1220-30, in the ambulatory of Chartres Cathedral, Eure-et-Loir, France. Chartres cathedral was built 1194-1250 and is a fine example of Gothic architecture. Most of its windows date from 1205-40 although a few earlier 12th century examples are also intact. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Picture by Manuel Cohen
