Chateau d'Azay-le-Rideau, 16th century Renaissance chateau, Loire Valley, Inde-et-Loire, France. The chateau was built in 1515-27 on the foundations of an 11th century fortress by Gilles de Berthelet, a wealthy financier who lived during the reign of King Francois I. It is built on an island in the Indre river so is surrounded by water. The building itself marries Italian architectural and French construction techniques and is one of the earliest French Renaissance chateaux. It is listed as a monument historique and UNESCO world heritage site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
