Kerak castle, Jordan

Kerak castle and its fortified walls and glacis or artificial slope of earth, viewed from the East with mountains behind, and part of the town of Karak, Kerak, Jordan. Kerak is a crusader castle begun in the 1140s under Pagan the Butler, Lord of Transjordan. It was the centre of power for Transjordan and was ruled by the crusader Renaud de Chatillon, the Ayyubids, Mamluks and Ottomans.
