Corons, aerial view, districts of terraced workers' houses with back gardens and outbuildings, built 1896-1902 by employers in Salin-de-Giraud, Bouches-du-Rhone, France. Companies like Pechiney and Solvay needed workers for their salt extraction businesses and housed them in purpose-built workers' villages, with hierarchical accommodation and amenity buildings. Many of the workers came from Greece and Armenia. Picture by Manuel Cohen
