Dante Alighieri, Italian poet, (1265-1321) wrote the Divine Comedy and was active in Florentine politics. The Basilica di Santa Croce is the main Franciscan church in Florence. The neo-Gothic marble facade, 1857-63, was designed by Nicolo Matas. Florence, capital of Tuscany, is world famous for its Renaissance art and architecture.
