Mosaic, Museo Nacional de Arte Romano, Merida, Extremadura, Spain

Victorious charioteer named Marcianus, holding whip and palm frond, detail from the Aurigas mosaic, Roman, 4th century AD, from the Calle Arzobispo Massona in Merida, in the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano, or National Museum of Roman Art, designed by Rafael Moneo and built 1981-86, housing Roman collections from the colony of Emerita Augusta, founded in 25 BC by Emperor Augustus, now modern-day Merida, Extremadura, Spain. This floor mosaic is decorated with geometric and plant motifs, and 3 images of a bacchic scene and 2 chariots. The Roman remains in Merida are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
