Chieftain burial mound, Janabiyah, Bahrain

Chieftain mound, 2200-1750 BC, an early Dilmun tomb at the Janabiyah Burial Mound Field, part of the Dilmun Burial Mounds site, Janabiyah, Bahrain. This is 1 of 5 Chieftain Mounds, up to 26m wide, where people were buried above ground in the foetal position with a small alcove containing offerings, usually pottery, in 2 tiered chambers. The Janabiyah tombs were constructed for residents of the villages of Saar and Budaiya. These tombs are at risk, due to the planned construction of a shopping mall. Picture by Manuel Cohen
