Martyrdom of St Mark by Giovanni Bellini, Gallerie dell’Accademia, Venice, Italy

The painting was commissioned in 1515 and finished by Belliniano in 1526, after the death of Bellini. St Mark was martyred in 68 AD in Alexandria, by being tied up and dragged through the streets (right). It was originally painted for the Sala dell’Albergo of the Scuola Grande di San Marco.
