Sassi di Matera, the old part of town built on original prehistoric troglodyte dwellings, at Matera, Basilicata, Southern Italy. The Sassi are thought to be the oldest human settlement in Italy, dating back to 7000 BC. The 52m bell tower of Matera Cathedral, built 1268ñ70, dominates the skyline.
