Originally, the rosette shaped building inspired by the Legion d'Honneur medal, was intended to house big cats but ended up housing large herbivores instead. Founded in 1794 by Jacques Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, the Menagerie of Jardin des Plantes became the largest exotic animal collection in Europe in the 19th century and is the second oldest public zoo in the world.
